Friends of The Lay Centre will gather in Washington, D.C., on 2 February.

Friends and supporters of The Lay Centre in the United States will gather once again in Washington, D.C., to lend their support to The Lay Centre’s threefold mission of promoting the lay vocation, promoting Christian unity, and nurturing interreligious dialogue. The Lay Centre does this through providing a residential community for lay students in Rome and also through its extensive local and international programs.

The annual benefit evening will be on Monday, 2 February 2015. It will begin with sung Vespers at 6:30 pm, followed by a reception and a lecture. A special invitation is extended to The Lay Centre alumni, in and around the Washington area.

Professor Leo Lefebure will give The Lay Centre Washington Lecture 2015.

Professor Leo D. Lefebure will give The Lay Centre Washington Lecture.

Rev. Prof. Leo D. Lefebure will deliver this year’s Washington Lecture on the theme, “‘You Will Be My Witnesses’ (Acts 1:8): Following Jesus Christ in a World of Conflict and Suffering”.

Prof. Lefebure will address a current issue facing the Christian community. In many areas around the world, Christians today face discrimination, persecution, and the threat of violence from militant groups who often claim to act in the name of religion. These conflicts present a most challenging context for the perennial call to bear witness to the Gospel of Jesus Christ, and the responses of many Christians have been heroic and inspiring.  He will explore the witness of Christians in conflict zones around the world in recent years.  Their courage offers examples of Christian discernment, solidarity and faithfulness.

Prof. Lefebure is the Matteo Ricci, S.J., Professor of Theology at Georgetown University and a Catholic priest of the Archdiocese of Chicago.  He has authored numerous books, including most recently, True and Holy: Christian Scripture and Other Religions (Orbis Books 2013)He also co-authored The Path of Wisdom: A Christian Commentary on the Dhammapada, which received the 2011 Frederick J. Streng Book of the Year Award from the Society for Buddhist-Christian Studies.

This event will be held at Georgetown Visitation (1524 35th Street NW). Free parking is available on the premises.

For more information or to register, please do so before 26 January 2015, by contacting Ms. Nancy Lindsay at nelindsay@aol.com or by calling +1 (202) 364-4256.
